why blog?

April 22, 2017

I have been agonizing over starting this blog for months now. The idea was planted in my head some time ago, and I began to really consider it only several months ago after my moving to Ohio. Why then? To be honest.. because I have a lot more free time now as I am only just beginning to make friends and navigate the social (and actual) landscape of Toledo. Too often, I find myself sitting and home and watching Netflix. Though lazily enjoyable, this is not a life-giving activity for me. Baking, and talking about baking, is life-giving for me.

Part of my reasoning for starting this blog is as a challenge to myself. A challenge to bake more and learn new techniques, and to share my experiments and failures with others. A challenge to try to take better photos of the food I make. This is something that is difficult for me.

I spent hours trying to decide what to name my blog. The name seems so important. All of it seems so important. Once I put my words out there on the internet I can never take them back completely. However, I finally realized that I could spend years trying to find the perfect name and it would never really feel perfect. So I decided to just go with a basic name that tells it to you straight. (I have to admit it was very difficult not to use a pun. I do love puns. But I couldn't come up with the perfect one so I decided I better not.)

I have to be honest- I feel a little silly starting this blog. Blogging is so popular these days- it seems like almost everyone I meet has a blog. But is that a bad thing? I guess more now than ever, it has become important to establish yourself online. So this is my attempt to do so, but also just to share what foods I am thinking about, learning about, and baking. I want to share recipes and ideas I think are awesome but also the background on different foods and techniques. I don't know about you, but every time I use a new ingredient or make a new recipe, I want to know more, to understand why what I'm doing works the way it does. Hopefully, I will be able to share some of the whys and hows behind different cooking techniques. Part of the reason I'm telling you my reasoning for starting this blog is so that you can hold me accountable. I don't want this to just be a place where I post fun recipes. My goal is to learn something new for every post I write, and in turn, pass that new knowledge on to you!

I have interspersed a few photos of what I have baked in the last few months. YUM. What are you baking?

  1. I am so incredibly proud of you for taking this huge step and I cannot make to hear about your experiences personally, but also read about them and learn how to become somewhat of a baker myself. Thank you for being such a great friend and making me my own slice of cake because I'm allergic to nuts. I love you, girl! ❤️ Keep up the good work!
